Why Cleanse? Why Isagenix®?

nicolekafka-107x135jpgTrainer: Consultant Dr. Nicole Kafka

Scheduling a regular Cleanse Day is key to ridding the body of impurities, but why else should you cleanse? Learn more about why cleansing is so important for your body and listen in as Consultant Dr. Nicole Kafka shares the benefits of regular cleansing and why Nutritional Cleansing with Isagenix is different than the other cleanses on the market.

>> Alright. Well, good evening everyone and welcome to our Thursday night product training with Isagenix. My name is Kjersti Cote, your host. And I am so excited about tonight’s call. And I know we have on the line listening, Ted Brooks, Dr. Ted Brooks. I have to tell everybody, for those of you who are brand new, the company was founded seven years ago and upon that time, we needed support out in the field and Dr. Ted Brooks was so kind in volunteering for all of our conference calls. Ted, I know that you are listening and it’s quite an honor having you on. As a matter of fact, everything I learned about parasites and the need for cleansing came from Ted Brooks and my dad, John Anderson. So, anyhow, very very neat.

We have a very very special guest on the line with us; Dr. Nicole Kafka. We are going to be talking about why cleanse, why Isagenix. Now, Dr. Kafka has not been one of our product training before so I’m very excited for her to share her story and how she discovered Isagenix. We are going to talk a little bit about some statistics and what’s going on with the state of health right now. And then, of course, we will segue into Isagenix. So, I would love to give Dr. Kafka a full introduction as all of you are not familiar with who she is and where she comes from and all that good stuff.

Dr. Kafka is a Board Certified General in Colon and Rectal Surgeon with a practice limited to colon rectal surgery. She has been in practice since 1998. She’s an assistant clinical professor of surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and an attending surgeon at both Beth Israel Medical Center and Lennox Hill Hospital in New York City. So, obviously hailing from New York City. Dr. Kafka received her undergraduate degree with honors from Harvard University and her medical degree from Cornell University and she completed her training in general surgery at the New York Hospital, and the colon and rectal surgery at the Ferguson Clinic in Grand Rapids, Michigan. So, she not only has these degrees but she also has completed her post doctoral fellowships in molecular and cell biology of colon and rectal cancer at Thomas Jefferson University and in pelvic floor physiology at the Leighe Clinic.

She’s a published author in her field. She sits on many many committees. And she’s been interviewed for publications, appeared on radio and television shows and besides her medical career, she’s a cabaret singer. You know, Dr. Kafka, we have, like, a talent show at our annual event happening in nine weeks. I don’t know what are you doing in nine weeks, but it might be kind of fun at our annual celebration. But she, with her gift of singing, she’s appeared at several venues in and around New York City and often too sold out shows. So that tells you a little bit about her talent. So, it brings me great pleasure to bring Dr. Kafka on the line to all of you. So with that, Dr. Kafka, good evening, welcome to the call.

>> Hi, Kjersti. Thank you very much. I’m glad to be here.

>> Well, you know, it’s a pleasure having you and I know you coming on the call this week was kind of last minute and we are just so thrilled. The Isagenix University was last weekend and I know that you attended and our marketing department called me quickly Monday morning and said Dr. Kafka would be perfect for a product training and it just so happened we had availability. And, of course, in talking with you a little bit on Monday you shared a touch of your story. So why don’t we, before we get into any questions, have you share your Isagenix story. How did you discover Isagenix and were you a skeptic? So kind of take us back.

>> Sure. I have the great good fortune in my singing life to have two very very good friends, Stephanie Wings and Beverly Vanessa who are both Isagenix consultants, star consultants. And for about two years they tried to convince me that I should try product. And I was    skeptical would be a soft way of putting it; I essentially said this is absurd, I’m a doctor. These herbs, everybody has an herb and a spice and a lotion or a potion or a something that they claim fixes everything and I think that you are completely absurd and I’m not going to do this. So for two years they very gently kept suggesting that I try product and finally last fall when I was putting together a show, Beverly and Vanessa said, well, if you are going to do the best show that you possibly can you have to try Isagenix products. And I got really really irritated and I gritted my teeth and I agreed to try a nine day, with the idea that when it then had no effect on me at all, they would be quiet and leave me alone.

I couldn’t do that because at the end of nine days I had lost six pounds of weight that I had been unable to take off no matter what I did for the previous two or three years. And I felt great and people who saw me casually in my life and patients and all kinds of people, my doorman of the building, started asking me what was I doing and I look fabulous and my skin was wonderful. And so I was somewhat taken back and I couldn’t say go away so I started using the product and I said but I’m never going to tell anybody about this, And I’m certainly never going to do the business and I’m never going to tell patients about it because it would be unethical to tell patients about these products because I don’t know anything about them and just because they worked for me that’s just an individual story and that’s not evidence and there’s no proof. And so I, you know, blindly went along my way for a few months using product and feeling great and more and more people started asking me and I finally started telling people, friends, about the products and they had amazing results.

And so many people had so many wonderful results and not just from a weight loss point of view, from a mental functioning point of view, from a general health point of view, that I reached the point where I decided it would be unethical to not tell people, including my patients. And so I now talk to pretty much everybody about Isagenix. I encourage my patients to use products as I think appropriate for them and if they choose not to that’s fine and I’m happy to take care of them, you know, with whatever plan they want to undertake, but I do explain to them that I think their best outcomes will be if they change their health around generally by using Isagenix products. So I’m completely converted. I have gone out, as a result, with all my scientific background and bought a whole bunch of books which I’m now going to learn more about why and how the product work. And I’m very excited about doing that, but I’m even more excited about the tremendous gift that we can provide people for their health and their well being.

>> Wow, that’s an amazing story. I love your honesty in sharing that. You know, what your intentions were and your ideas behind Isagenix and really doing the nine-day to prove your friends wrong. I have met so many healthcare provides that that’s exactly what they do. That is exactly, like I have been working with one guy most recently, he’s actually a physicians assistant, and he did the nine day cleanse to prove me wrong and did the exact same thing with what you did and everybody else does. You know, drop a few pounds, leaned out more, saw amazing    he did a body composition on himself and, of course, and did some other studies and tests and he was so tickled that now he’s incorporating it into his clinic. So this is so exciting.

I know there’s a huge number of health professionals out there that are using Isagenix as a system for some of their patients to be able to take advantage of. And now before we get into the details of Isagenix, let’s talk about the state of health. This is something that I know you have a very    [sirens]    are you there?

>> Yeah, I’m here.

>> Are you still there?

>> I’m here.

>> Okay. There were sirens. You know, I mean this is something that you have a very close look at as far as the state of health and what’s going on right now. So maybe you can share statistics with us and what you see, what you have studied and read and what we are dealing with today in 2009.

>> Well, I think we are dealing with a variety of issues of health problems that are getting to be more of a problem. We have done really well managing certain kinds of things like infectious diseases, pneumonias and other infections that used to be big killers in this country. They remain big killers in third world countries, but not so much here. So now what do we have going on? Well, we have people who have chronic illnesses like diabetes, like recurring strokes, like arthritis, like auto immune diseases and then we have people dying from heart disease, strokes, cancers, and other diseases of that kind that seem to be associated with high levels of inflammatory activity in the body as well as some of them appearing to be increased in people with certain kinds of food intakes and potentially increased amounts of toxins in their body and environment. And then we have, related to the diabetes and the heart disease and all of these things but also separate in some ways, we have obesity which is a huge enormous enormous problem.

If you go back only to 1990, so we are just talking about not even twenty years and you look at the CDC’s, the Center For Disagree Control, data about obesity, they looked at all of the states that they can get information on and ten states had a less than ten percent obesity rate and no state had an obesity rate that was equal to or more than 15 percent. Within eight years of have, by 1998, there was no state that had an obesity rate less than 10 percent. Seven states had a rate between 20 and 24 percent. And nobody got above 24 percent. So that means that we went from 10 states under 10 percent to no states under 10 percent. We went from no states more than 15 percent to 7 states above 20 percent. And by 2007, two years ago, only one state, the state of Colorado, had a prevalence of obesity under 20 percent. Whereas 30 states had obesity rates of 25 percent or more and three had obesity rates of 30 percent or more. That is huge.

And it’s huge also in our children. Our children now have obesity rates of a little over 12 percent of ages two through five and over 17 1/2 percent in the adolescent post adolescent ages of 12 19, with much higher rates in minority populations. And we know that our health is hugely affected by our healthiest children. So what we are looking at is a huge number of obese children with high blood pressure, with high cholesterol, with pre diabetic and diabetic conditions and those kids are going to grow into very sick adults.

So we are potentially looking at, for the first time, children who may not live as long as their parents. We don’t know that, we can’t really project that for sure, but we certainly know that childhood illness is a big contributor and childhood stress, additionally, with its impact on physiology and how the body works, is a huge contributor. There was a just an issue of the New England Journal of Medicine    I’m sorry, the Journal of the American Medical Association last week whose emphasis was on the impact of childhood illness and childhood stress on life expectancy and adult illness. These are huge huge problems that we are seeing out in our world today.

>> Yeah, absolutely. And one of the things too that I can’t help but think when I have been around those who have lectured and have given talks on this exact subject is the number of the diseases and illness that really didn’t even exist 20 or 30 years ago. You know, and let’s talk about the toxic environment that we live in. I just think back to our ancestors that lived 50 100 years ago and the lack of things that they were actually exposed to that could be detrimental to their health. So what is your take on your the environmental toxicity that we are exposed to each and every day?

>> Well, you know, it used to be as I started saying before about infectious diseases, it used to be that what was in our environment that got us was infectious agents, plague, malaria, tuberculosis, polio. We have done a great job with a lot of those things. What has surplanted those things, what has taken their place is that in developing our world in building our buildings, in changing our agriculture systems to mega farms and broadly shipped foods, what we have done is introduced into our environment hundreds and thousands of substances, many of which are toxic and most of which have not even been studied. And often substances are approved and used before any attention is given to whether there might be toxic and then later, low and behold, it’s discovered that in fact they are. Many of those things then become illegal in our country, but it almost doesn’t matter because if they are used elsewhere they end up on our food and they end up in our air and they end up in our water, it’s one world, and so there are vast numbers of toxins out there which we ingest.

And studies have been done looking at the body burden of toxins. That is how much of what is hanging around where. And some things clear pretty fast, but other things can stay around for 50 years or more. And we just don’t know exactly what we are all carrying around, although it’s been estimated that everyone live today carries at least 700 contaminates regardless of where they live and regardless of how hard they try to eat and be healthy. A study from the U.S. Center for Disease Control recently revealed that 97 percent of Americans are contaminated with oxybenzone which is a widely used sunscreen ingredient that’s been linked to allergies, hormone disruption and cell damage. These things, oxybenzone, also helps other chemical get into the skin. So all folks out there using all these products to protect themselves from sun damage and skin cancer are getting huge burdens of toxins and it’s certain that a lot of the other toxins that we are exposed to through our skin are getting into us.

And finally, something really really important is they started looking at toxin loads in children, even in babies, and they have a very high toxin load. And that is probably because in pregnancy the chemicals in the mother’s body can often cross the placenta and other times they are also transferred in breast milk. So breast milk is great for immunological and nutritional and psychological benefits for babies, but unfortunately our breast milk tends to be toxic. So we start off our lives with all of these pollutants.

A study from the Environment Working Group with Common Wheel at two major laboratories found an average of 200 industrial chemicals and pollutant in umbilical blood from ten babies that they studied in 2004. And I think that that really is just a frightening consideration, particularly when we get back to the idea of our health, our lifetime health being affected so much by our exposures and our diseases young and when we consider that babies don’t have organs that are mature enough to really clear stuff out very well.

>> Right.

>> So they are liable to be even more damaged by these agents and also because of the rapid rate of growth and the rapid development of cells, even faster than our own, and adults are turning over billions and billions of cells. But even faster is the rate of growth and development of babies and young children. For them to be carrying up this toxic load, I think, is very concerning.

>> Oh, my goodness. You know what? You are in the kidding. And I think, you know, everything that we are exposed to    I remember when was getting tested to see if I could donate a kidney to my dad, part of the testing, which it was like four days of intensive testing at the Mayo Clinic down in Scottsdale and I had an MRI for the very first time. And they inject an iodine, obviously, Dr. Kafka, as you well know, and I at that very moment discovered how amazing our vascular system was, because as the iodine went in through my IV in my arm it traveled into the center of my body into the main aorta and pulsated through from my chest to my groin area and feet in about two seconds. And I thought, oh, my gosh, the blood flow travels so incredibility fast in the body. And, of course, any healthcare provider that has received medical education knows this, but for me, I’m not a doctor, I was absolutely astounded.

And so when you think about everything that are you rubbing on your skin or you are breathing in and those things traveling into the body and it’s a pretty scary thing. I think you did a beautiful job in kind of giving some serious stats on what we are exposed to, the state of health. I want to shift now into Isagenix, so before I do that I want to make sure that we have a disclaimer in here and that is that as Dr. Kafka has shared a lot of information you always need to keep in mind that while no one product can single handedly remedy these issues we are facing today, it’s imperative that we do something to support our health and our well being.

So right now we want to segue into talking about Isagenix and our amazing cleansing systems and talk about some of the benefits and key points to our product line. So with that, Dr. Kafka, based on your research and the things that you have able to — the time that you have been able to invest in looking into Isagenix, the products and what you have learned, what are some of the key things that really set Isagenix apart in your eyes and some of the key points to Isagenix that you truly have fallen in love with.

>> You know, there are a lot of wonderful things about Isagenix. I would start with the quality of the product. And there are already within that there are several considerations, one is the purity of the components of the products. Everything is so carefully selected and then checked and then rechecked and rechecked to make sure that what goes into the product is really what is intended to go into the product and that it’s not contaminated with other substances with toxic materials, et cetera. That’s huge.

There are so many products out there that either don’t contain what they are supposed to contain or what they contain is so degraded and broken down and old that it’s not of any use, or it’s just poor quality materials and that’s not regulated. So it’s very important when people tell me that they use other supplements, you know, most of those things are not really what people think that they are getting. And there have actually been studies looking at certain specific supplements and when they looked at them they found that the level of active ingredient was so variable that they couldn’t even do the studies. So, that’s one thing, is the absolute cleanliness, the purity and reliability of the product and the fact that the company really is quality oriented and not cheap and inexpensive supply oriented. That’s huge. That’s enormous for me.

The very careful selection of what the ingredients are that go into these things and the science behind it, oh, my goodness. You know, we have ingredients in our products from many many different traditions and I salute your dad and I salute Mr. Wheeler and his team on the initial formulation and the development of those products. And the physiologic understanding that went into choosing those things. Examples of those things, for example, the use of ionized minerals and ionic alfalfa, that’s another huge thing. We have tremendous deficiencies in nutrients and our non Isagenix foods. And that arises because of soil that has essentially been used up. So that the amount of iron, for example, in spinach now verses twenty years ago is a fraction of what it used to be. So we are not getting enough nutrients.

Well, that’s great, but most forms of minerals our bodies can’t absorb. What they can absorb better are ionized minerals. And so the fact that these products have significant amounts of ionized absorbable minerals, to me, is huge. Those minerals and the trace elements that we don’t even talk about so much are the things that help all the enzymes, the machines of ourselves, work. Without them, everything grinds to a halt. The presence of good quality vitamins also.

If you look at our population, a large proportion of the population, particularly of those living in the northern states and Canada and so forth are deficient in vitamin D. That’s just an example of one vitamin, but here we are, we are providing all of the vitamins that people need, really good quantities, to make sure that the vitamins likewise, which we can’t function without, are provided. And then you get to the nutritional sources, the amino acids, the fatty acid sources and et cetera that give us all of the nutrients we need, clean, easily absorbable, easily useable, without all kinds of junky stuff with no nutrient value to it.

So we take all those things and then we add in things that help us to deal with stress. That to me is huge. I love ionic supreme. I think ionics is an amazing product, an amazing idea, it’s got the minerals in it, it’s got a variety of herbs. And what it’s got is an adaptogens in it. Right? These are things that change the way our body’s physiologically respond to stress, and how huge is that? When we developed biologically, we were out there sort of hunting and gathering and doing whatever we did and living a relatively low stress life except for moments of absolute terror when some predator would come or we would be falling off a cliff or something, and our bodies developed responses to stress that would help us in those moments of terror. But having the affect, the high Cortisol levels and so forth associated with those responses around all of the time, like we do in our lives now, is very bad for us.

And so here are these carefully selected herbs studied, there are over 5,000 papers about adaptogens that help us to deal physiologically with stress, to make us feel better, to make our bodies work better, to make us not hold on to extra water and extra fat, and modify our inflammatory responses. So, again, huge huge benefit. And then on the other side, I have been talking about the things we are putting in our body, that we are adding and that we are utilizing, the other side is the cleansing side. And we have got the best cleansing product out there.

The world is full of people whose idea of cleansing is to do nothing but drink water and lemon juice for a week. Well, they are getting no nutrition while they do that; all their body systems are grinding to a halt. They are stressing their bodies in many ways. They are acidifying, so they are getting away from a nice neutral pH and that impairs their body function as well. So a lot of those cleanses out there are not healthy things. The idea is good, but they are not really healthy and they don’t really have the capacity either to work with our bodies in the really wonderful ways that the Isagenix cleanse products do to help us to clear out the junk, open up the space, to bring in the good stuff, and build our healthy bodies. You know, if you eat junk food you get junk body.

>> Right, I know. [Talking simultaneously]

>> Go ahead.

>> I was just going to say if you cleanse and eat good food you get good body. We have all these billions of cells that we replace, our intestinal linings, our blood gets replaced every 90 days and our skin keeps turning over. We are replacing all these cells all of the time and they are only going to be as good as when we build them out of.

>> I know, it’s absolutely fascinating, the human body, to me, and all of the cells that make up the body and the tissues, everything, the organs. And so you have talked about the cleanse, you have talked about the vitamins and minerals and the careful selection of them. And I am like, I am so proud of my dad’s great work and, of course, with Bill Wheeler, you know, being on the product development side of things as well and it’s just exciting to see what’s going on. And even though Isagenix was founded with the latest and the greatest technological products, you know, the advancing obviously, and that leads me to our way protein. You know, the new process of cheese, it’s this exclusive process that’s high tech high touch, of course, yielding even a more superior way protein than what we already had, and what we already had was phenomenal. These new shakes are going to be launched here in just a few weeks; Dr. Kafka, you were at the ICU this last week and got to taste them.

>> Yeah.

>> Tell everybody.

>> I did get to taste them. They are incredibly creamy; they don’t have any grittiness left at all. They taste a lot like a soft ice cream, like a frozen custard, like a Dairy Queen or a Mr. Softie, and indeed, the way that they were made at ICU, they were made extra thick, so it was really like having a soft ice cream. And you can make it that way, you know, you can make it double thick and have it like a soft ice cream and then just make sure that you drink water with it. I think they will be amazing, I think the vanilla is going to be really great with fruit. It’s a much more pure straightforward vanilla flavor, it doesn’t have that kind of cinnamon, slightly, you know, different taste to it. But obviously if you like that, you can put some cinnamon or something in there. I think that they are wonderful and the fact that they have, you know, even better whey protein, an even healthier product, that they have somewhat less lactose, which is great because there are all those people out there that can’t tolerate –

oh, that reminds me. Another great thing about our product is the enzymes and the fiber that are included that help digestion so so much. And the fiber pro and the shakes actually, which also have the probiotics in there to keep a good balance of healthy bacteria in our gut, which makes digestion so much smoother and allows us to use the nutrients so much better. So I think that’s fabulous and the new shakes are just one example of how Isagenix keeps going. When I was talking about purity and quality before, it’s important to recognize that this is not a company that just rests on its laurels.

These are not people who are just saying, oh, we got it and it’s good, that’s good enough. We have the best products out there, and they are continually being improved. You know, the cleanse was just updated and improved. The shakes are now being updated and improved. The whatchamacallit, the, um, the    okay, I lost it. The new berry, I want to say cookies, but they are not cookies.

>> Oh, the slim cakes, the slim cakes.

>> Okay. I just wanted to say cookies because I think of them as cookies. But we have the new slim cakes, very smart, right? They are a little bit smaller because nobody could eat those huge ones before. But they also have more antioxidants; they have a great great amount of fiber. As a colon rectal surgeon I’m always looking for ways to get people eat more fiber. You need 25 30 grams of fiber; nobody gets that from their food. Well, we do. We get it because it’s in our shakes. It’s in our slim cakes, it’s in our fiber pro, it’s in our bars. So we get the fiber, we get the water and that helps our guts work, you know? Our bodies were built when we ate a lot of raw fiber. And we do that to keep things working properly, you know?

>> Wow. I just was going to say that you brought up so many good points and I love the fact that you got to taste the shakes this last weekend. You are touching on the fiber, the water, all of these good things and I’m sure that you are just ecstatic about the multi enzyme formula, the fiber pro, these things, you know, to increase the amount of fiber that you are supposed to be taking on a daily basis. Obviously, it’s a total body line of product. It’s designed to feed and nourish the body as a whole. I mean, now, have you ever gone without putting Isagenix in your body over the last six months? If you ran out of something and actually then, like, going through withdraws, Dr. Kafka, have you experienced that yet?

>> I have run out of individual products, um, I can’t say that I go through withdraw, because I don’t think    you know, that implies an addictive kind of thing. What I can say is I don’t feel as good. And that’s what I say to people also when they say, well, how long do I have to do this? And I say, well, as long as you want to feel good, as long as you want to be healthy. You know? And they say, well, you mean it wears off? I say, well, if you stop going to the gym, does it wear off?
